Delmarva Pet Guide: Vets, Beaches & Where Dogs Are Welcome

A huge share of Delmarva relocators move with dogs — and "can my dog go on the beach?" is one of the most-asked questions in every beach town. This guide answers it town by town, plus where to find a vet.
DOGS ON THE BEACH: Town-by-Town Rules
The short version: summer is restricted nearly everywhere; the off-season (roughly October–April) is dog paradise. Delaware has a statewide leash law — dogs must be leashed except on your own property.
Delaware beaches
| Beach | Summer rule | Off-season |
|---|---|---|
| Rehoboth Beach | No dogs on beach or boardwalk, approx. mid-May–mid-Sept (sources cite May 15–Sept 15; confirm current city code) | Allowed — leashed |
| Dewey Beach | Memorial Day weekend–mid-Sept: before 9:30 AM and after 5:30 PM only | Allowed all day; off-leash permitted under voice control — but all dogs need a Dewey Beach dog license (available online or at Town Hall) |
| Bethany Beach | Prohibited on beach & boardwalk May 15–Sept 30 | Allowed all day Oct 1–May 14 |
| South Bethany | Prohibited mid-May–mid-Oct | Allowed Oct 16–May 14 |
| Fenwick Island | Prohibited May 1–Sept 30 | Allowed — leashed |
| Lewes | May 1–Sept 30: before 8 AM and after 6:30 PM only | Allowed all day |
| Slaughter Beach | Allowed year-round, leashed | Allowed year-round |
| Delaware State Parks (Cape Henlopen, Delaware Seashore, Fenwick Island) | Prohibited on swimming/sunbathing (lifeguarded) beaches May 1–Sept 30; allowed on non-guarded beaches year-round | Allowed |
Local tip: Dewey Beach is the dog capital of the Delaware coast — off-leash hours, a town dog license program, and water bowls outside half the shops. If beach access for your dog is a priority, Dewey deserves a long look.
Maryland beaches
| Beach | Summer rule | Off-season |
|---|---|---|
| Ocean City beach & boardwalk | Prohibited May 1–Sept 30 (actively enforced — fines apply) | Allowed Oct 1–Apr 30, leashed |
| Assateague Island National Seashore (MD) | Allowed year-round, 6-ft leash | Allowed year-round |
| Assateague State Park | Day-use areas, trails & camping loops: off-season only (Oct 1–Apr 30) | Allowed |
| Stinky Beach (West Ocean City) | Locals' favorite dog beach, year-round | Year-round |
Virginia
Virginia's Eastern Shore beaches are generally dog-friendly with leashing — Chincoteague, Cape Charles, and the refuge-adjacent beaches welcome leashed dogs, though Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge trails have restrictions (dogs prohibited on the beach/swim areas of the refuge; allowed in some areas). Check refuge-specific rules before visiting.
DOG PARKS & OFF-LEASH AREAS
- Lewes Unleashed Dog Park (Lewes, DE) — separate small/large dog areas, agility equipment, shade
- Rehoboth Beach Dog Park (Rehoboth Beach, DE) — fenced, in-town
- Millsboro Dog Park (Millsboro, DE) — fenced, separate areas, water fountains
- Ocean City Dog Playground (94th St bayside, Ocean City, MD) — the only off-leash outdoor area in OC; separate small/large sections
- Northside Park (Ocean City, MD) — 58 acres of leashed walking trails by the bay
PET-FRIENDLY TOWNS & PATIOS
St. Michaels, MD may be the most pet-friendly town on the East Coast — water bowls outside nearly every shop, pet menus at restaurants with outdoor seating, and dogs welcome just about everywhere except inside food establishments.
Across the beach towns, most restaurants with outdoor patios welcome leashed dogs — many with generous, dog-friendly patios, especially around the beach towns’ boardwalk and bayfront areas. When in doubt, call ahead; policies are generous but not universal.
VETERINARIANS: Finding Your Vet
Coastal Delmarva has solid veterinary coverage, but new-patient waits exist — establish care before there's an emergency. What to look for:
- AAHA accreditation (American Animal Hospital Association) — a meaningful quality marker
- After-hours plan — ask directly: "If my dog is hit by a car at 11 PM, where do I go?" Get the answer in writing.
- Boarding/daycare if you travel
Verified practices
Delaware coast:
- Savannah Animal Hospital (Lewes, DE) — AAHA-accredited full-service hospital; digital radiology, laser surgery, boarding and daycare; refers after-hours emergencies to a 24-hour facility
- Haven Lake Animal Hospital (Milford, DE) — full-service plus rehabilitation (underwater treadmill, laser therapy); serves Kent and Sussex counties
Maryland Eastern Shore:
- The Guardian Vet Group (Pittsville, MD) — 24/7 emergency animal hospital serving the Ocean City/Salisbury corridor
- Midshore Veterinary Service (Easton, MD) — full-service hospital; 24-hour emergency on-call for established patients
The critical advice for the guide: Every pet owner should program their nearest 24-hour emergency vet into their phone the week they move in. The closest ER may be 30–45 minutes away in rural parts of the Shore — know the drive before you need it.
MOVING WITH PETS: Checklist
- Transfer vet records and refill long-term prescriptions before the move
- Update microchip registration with the new address on day one
- Get the town dog license — Dewey Beach requires one; most towns have licensing rules
- Learn the beach calendar — the summer restrictions catch every newcomer once
- Find the ER vet — see above; don't wait for the emergency
- Check HOA pet rules — many 55+ and condo communities have breed, size, or number restrictions buried in the covenants
