Delmarva Winter Guide: Events & Things to Do (November–February)

Delmarva's off-season is the locals' secret — holiday lights without the crowds, beach walks with nobody around, and a packed calendar of small-town celebrations. This guide gives winter visitors and relocators a reason to come (and stay) after summer ends.
NOVEMBER
Rehoboth Beach Independent Film Festival — Early November, Rehoboth Beach. One of the Mid-Atlantic's best-regarded regional film festivals: a long weekend of indie films, documentaries, and filmmaker Q&As. The cultural high point of the fall.

Waterfowl Festival — Mid-November, Easton, MD. Three days celebrating the Eastern Shore's waterfowl heritage: world-class decoy carving, retriever demonstrations, art, and food. A genuinely unique Eastern Shore tradition.

Rehoboth Beach Tree Lighting — Friday evening after Thanksgiving, at the Bandstand. A compact community sing-along that officially opens the local holiday season — arrive from a beach walk or an afternoon of tax-free shopping.

Winterfest of Lights opens — November 19, 2026, Northside Park, Ocean City, MD. Over a million lights, animated displays, a 50-foot Christmas tree, hot chocolate and bonfires. Runs through January 2, 2027. Admission ~$6 (12+), kids free. The single biggest holiday attraction on Delmarva.

Horseback riding on the beach — November 1 through March 30, Ocean City, MD. Permit holders can ride horses on the beach all winter — one of the most magical off-season experiences on the coast.

DECEMBER
Hometown Christmas Parade — Monday, December 7, 2026, Rehoboth Avenue, Rehoboth Beach. Evening parade through downtown, 6:30 PM.

Lewes Christmas Parade & Tree Lighting — Early December, downtown Lewes. A classic small-town parade followed by the mayor's tree lighting and candlelight caroling.
Holiday Tour of Lewes — Early December. The Lewes Historical Society opens beautifully decorated historic homes to the public — a beloved tradition (tickets ~$25).
Christmas in St. Michaels — Second weekend of December, St. Michaels, MD. Nearly 30 years running: Tour of Homes, Holiday Gala, Breakfast with Santa, and the largest holiday parade on Maryland's Eastern Shore.
Bethany Beach Weekend Wonderland — December weekends, Bethany Beach. Kids' activities, cocoa and caroling, drop-and-shop childcare events.
Fenwick Island Tree Lighting — Early December, Cannon Street Park gazebo. Hot chocolate, cookies, small-town warmth.
Dewey Beach Grand Menorah Lighting — Early December, Dewey Baywalk. A 9-foot menorah lighting with latkes, doughnuts, and music — free and festive.
Milton Christmas Parade — First Wednesday in December, downtown Milton. Fire-company sponsored, classic small-town.
Ocean City NYE Fireworks — December 31, Northside Park. Free midnight fireworks over the bay, with Winterfest of Lights as the backdrop.
Santa's Houses — Weekends through Christmas in Rehoboth Beach (boardwalk at Rehoboth Ave, donation-based, including special hours for dogs) and Lewes.
JANUARY
Penguin Swim — New Year's Day, Ocean City, MD. Hundreds of costumed plungers hit the Atlantic at 1 PM to benefit Atlantic General Hospital. Spectating is free and highly entertaining.

Winter birding season — January is peak waterfowl season: Bombay Hook and Prime Hook National Wildlife Refuges (Delaware) host tens of thousands of snow geese, ducks, and raptors. Bring binoculars; the wildlife drives are spectacular.

Oyster season — Winter is oyster season on the Chesapeake and Delaware Bay. Raw bars, oyster roasts, and buy-boat-fresh shellfish from watermen's docks.
Restaurant weeks — January and February bring restaurant weeks to Rehoboth, Bethany, and Ocean City: prix-fixe menus at the beach towns' best restaurants, without the summer waits.
FEBRUARY
Rehoboth Beach Polar Bear Plunge — Early February (typically the first Sunday), Rehoboth Beach. Thousands plunge into the Atlantic to benefit Special Olympics Delaware — one of the largest winter events at the Delaware beaches, with a festive boardwalk atmosphere.

Valentine's weekends — The beach towns lean into romance: inn packages, prix-fixe dinners, and crowd-free boardwalk strolls.

Seal watching — Winter is seal season: harbor seals haul out on the rocks and beaches around Lewes, Cape Henlopen, and the Virginia barrier islands. Guided walks run at several refuges.

ALL WINTER LONG: Things to Do
- Beach walks — Empty beaches, dramatic skies, and the best shelling of the year. Cape Henlopen and Assateague in winter are transcendent.
- Tax-free holiday shopping — Delaware's 0% sales tax makes the Route 1 outlets and boutiques a regional shopping destination. (This is a legitimate tourism driver — say so.)
- Brewery, winery & distillery trails — Sussex County's craft beverage scene (Dogfish Head in Milton is the anchor) is a perfect gray-day activity.
- Cape May–Lewes Ferry — Runs year-round (reduced winter schedule); the 85-minute crossing is a mini-cruise with dolphin and bird sightings.
- Museums — The Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum (St. Michaels), Rehoboth Beach Museum, Zwaanendael Museum (Lewes), and Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad State Park all shine in winter — no crowds, full attention.
- Indoor waterparks & family fun — Several indoor options around Ocean City and the beach towns for kids' winter weekends.
- Storm watching — A genuine coastal pastime: big winter storms from a warm restaurant window on the boardwalk.
